how do you get people to "follow you" on Twitter

Hi

Having recently become a "fan" of twiiter I wondered if anyone has any suggestions for getting more people to follow you - with a like minded interest?

Any help much appreciated... or perhaps you could just follow me at Twitter under" lots2play" ?

An easy or at least a simple non technical method i have used before is to follow those that you would like to follow you, this generally returns a 75% follow back and may also pick you up some further follows at a later date.

I am sure someone will come along and give you a better idea of how to do so though.

The obvious one.

Have a lot of interesting content on your website, and a badge that tells them to follow you!

I've never had much luck with twitter. In theory it's got potential, but from what I've seen I haven't been able to use it for traffic or convert potential players. I might be doing it wrong or not enough.

Anyway, you asked how to get people to follow your twitter account? I have been following others who have a decent following/followers ratio. They tend to follow me after I follow them.

twitter can be a powerful tool however it can be time consuming so you have to weigh the odds here is the basics to draw targeted traffic.

search for your keywords:
follow as many peeple as you can 1000 limit at a time
create multiple twitter accounts
link your feedburner acccount to twitter to auto post whenever you post content
Use hootsuite to deliver tweets to multipe accounts
use tweetmanager to schedule, link multiple accounts, send mass direct messages. ---- works just like email..

Hi...

I think you should search for the relevant groups as of yours. Like if you belong to some gaming site then you should search for game related groups and join them.
Have some latest and interesting content in your account and keep your account up-to-date.
You follow the relevant people and then they will follow you!

Hi all

just a quick note of thanks to those that responded with advice re followers on Twitter... tried it...bit time consuming as some said.. but... it worked.... made contact with one very useful follower.. brilliant... now for twitter domination!

I prefer to add not more than 10 following a day and mostly about 7 out of them follow me.

I tend to find that every time I make a twitter post, I generally pick up 2 or 3 followers. Where they come from - I have no idea, but I think some people have software that keeps an eye on certain keywords. For example once I made an arbitary post saying something about preferring the old James Bond - Roger Moore to Daniel Craig and within seconds I had the " James Bond fan club " following me!
It helps to add your twitter account to forums ( like I have done below ) , your websites and even email accounts.

Some of the tests that i've done with another friend has led me to conclude that it's pretty worthless trying to find followers on twitter. Rather i would suggest you use twitter to connect with an existing audience, meaning get people who visit your site or sign-up for your mailing list to join your twitter group.

One of our tests my buddy tweeted a URL for a tool we've created to about 3500 followers and we received 1 retweet and 2 mentions from the group. a number of similar tests yielded similar results. Having thousands of followers who aren't listening is worthless. Essentially the folks who are most likely to follow you back, when you follow them are often other marketers who participate in what is effectively a link exchange.

finally, my buddy unfollowed the 3500 follows one day and within a couple of days well over 70% had unfollowed his ID. Why would an engaged use unfollow you just to because you stopped following? If the were "listening" to you because they were engaged, they wouldn't likely unfollow because i unfollowed them.

I also find it pointless to add followers just to get followers back. it is no point having followers for the sake of having followers. You want people who are genuinely interested in reading your content.
I only follow a few sites that I am really interested in. I hardly ever add a new follower.

Do you really read the tweets of your followers? I must say I generally don't, unless I come across a tweet, more or less accidentally, which has an interesting content for me. I assume the same thing happens to my tweets also. Since I do get traffic from the tweets, I assume some of my tweets deliver contents for those who come to my site.

However, I am not clear about one thing. Is it good or bad to repeat a tweet more or less regularly over a certain period, like a tweet over some bonus offer of a casino X?

You can also use services like Ping.fm to post your "tweets" or microblogs to multiple services/networks at once.

A final note, you should unfollow those that are not following you. If you want to break the 5,000 follow mark, you need to have a ratio of more people following you than you follow.

It seems that most of the people on twitter are advertising something. It's pretty easy to get followers, any search engine will bring up lots of programs that will provide you with long lists of people who are into the same things as you. And some of the programs will narrow the search to your field. The key of course is to get the followers who want to do more than just send you their own ads. A search in Twitter using your own keywords can find followers. And giving something useful in your tweets can help to attract more followers, who may be more interested in what you are promoting.
I get a few visitors quickly when I do Tweet.

The fastest way to get more followers is to start following more people. A lot of the people you follow will follow you back. So if you follow more people, you'll get more followers. Put links to your Twitter profile on your blog, website, Squidoo lenses, facebook page, and any other social networking sites where your fans and friends go.

Good question

If you have to just keep increasing your followers randomly to show off your account popularity, then I would prefer you to download some softwares which just add followers according to your keywords (i guess 100 a day)
Second option is to join groups of your niche in digg, facebook and other sites and follow their twitter accounts as they will follow you automatically

Personally on Twitter, when I have some information to give out I will use the search button and type in the relevant keywords and see people who have just posted and start following them.
I usually will only follow people with a photo of themselves up though as I have found a lot of my Twitter lists were not actually real people, it is no use having Twitter lists of computers as they can't read your latest updates.

I also only follow 40 or 50 people in any one day, that way you can closely look at who follows you back. Everytime I submit a new post though I find that usually around 3-10 people will follow me automatically.
